Some Things Should Be Left Where They Are

Eureka Springs was a wellness retreat due to the supposed healing waters of the springs. The trouble is, the people who came here to not die, still did. Some just from whatever ailment they were trying to cure themselves of, others from gross mistakes and/or negligence that killed many at a time.

They say this town is haunted by these spirits. When I first moved here, I rented a room from a woman who claimed that spirits hung out with her in her room. They would sit on her bed and she would talk to them. I figured that was her business.

The room I rented had this really long narrow closet with a low ceiling. It was really dark in there. It really didn’t make any sense why the closet was built that way. I kept Halloween decorations in it but mostly did my best to have no reason to be in there. After a little while, though, I started to feel a presence.

I became more and more uneasy. One of the decorations kept in this closet was this Phantom of the Opera figurine that would pull it’s mask off. I just knew that whatever it was, it was in that figure. I gave the figure away without telling the person why.

Unfortunately, that didn’t get rid of the feeling completely. So, I called on a shaman to cleanse my room. He was in there for a long time and when he came out, he said, I’ll never forget this, he said, “Janie, some things should be left where they are.” I found another place to stay after that.
